Most women have about the same physical prerequisites when it comes to giving birth. Generally, the biggest difference involves the emotional prerequisites, and usually determines if the experience is a good one or not. The feeling of being safe and trusting of those around is paramount. But the ability to relax mentally and physically is also important. If you can relax and breathe calmly, most things work themselves out.

There are many different types of courses. Some people read everything they get their hands on and attend every available course. Others choose to read one book and maybe take one class, while others don’t want to think about childbirth at all but reason that it will work itself out when the time comes.

The most important thing is that you do you. Lamaze classes may be the most common way to prepare, but yoga, hypnobirthing, mental training and other alternatives are available.

All prenatal clinics are required to offer parent training classes, although the structure and content may vary. Regardless of which method you choose, you should consider the knowledge you gain. Put this knowledge in an emotional perspective and consider its relevance and value in helping you through childbirth.
