A baby’s skin is very sensitive, so it is highly susceptible to irritation and rashes. When buying clothes for your kid it is important to keep in mind there are certain types of fabric that will be safer for them and gentler to their skin. Even though your baby will outgrow their clothes in the blink of an eye, remember that you should invest on clothes that are soft, flexible, breathable, durable and hypoallergenic. Irritating fabrics is one of the main triggers of eczema rash.
Some of the most recommended fabrics are:
- Cotton: it is a soft, gentle and long-lasting material, which is a popular fabric for babywear. It is especially recommended for babies under 6 months.
- Linen: it dries quickly and only gets softer as you wash it. Linen is also breathable and sun protecting.
- Bamboo: it is thermal regulating, hypoallergenic and absorbent.
- Jersey knit: it is breathable, soft and lets your baby move freely and comfortably. But it is not suitable for hot weather.
- Merino wool: it is a natural temperature-regulating fabric that is often used to make sweaters, blankets, and hats for small children. Merino wool is free from chemicals, soft against the skin, and breathable.
- Fleece: it is a good option to keep your baby warm and ideal for outwear. It is not, however, recommended for blankets, sleepwear or first skin. Fleece is not breathable, therefore, it can cause skin irritation and overheating.
