Many people notice a sudden need or a strong urge to clean, organize, and prepare their home towards the end of pregnancy.
This is often called the “nesting” feeling. It can show up as reorganizing furniture, washing baby clothes, deep-cleaning, or a general feeling of wanting everything to feel ready.
But why does this happen and what does it actually mean?
Nesting is a common experience during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester. It’s described as a natural instinct to prepare a safe, comfortable environment for the baby. For some, nesting is intense and focused. For others, it’s subtle, like wanting to tidy a space or plan ahead. There’s no one single way it has to be.
Why does nesting happen?
- Hormonal changes: Hormones that rise toward the end of pregnancy are thought to play a role in increased energy, motivation, and focus. These shifts may contribute to the desire to prepare and organize.
- Emotional preparation: Preparing your space is a way to mentally prepare for the upcoming life change. Creating order in your environment may help create a sense of calm and control.
- Protective instincts: Many people feel a strong drive to make their home feel safe, clean, and comfortable. This protective instinct is a normal part of preparing to welcome a baby.
What nesting does not mean
There are many myths around nesting. It’s important to know that:
- Nesting does not predict the labour is close
- Not feeling a nesting urge is completely normal
- Nesting doesn’t mean everything must be perfect
- Nesting doesn’t mean over buying
How to approach nesting in a healthy way
- Focus on essentials: Prioritize what truly matters, such as a safe sleeping space, basic baby supplies, and a comfortable place for feeding and rest.
- Pace yourself - Energy levels can change quickly during pregnancy. Take breaks, avoid heavy lifting, and stop if you feel tired or uncomfortable.
- Ask for help: Nesting doesn’t have to be a solo project. Let partners, friends, or family help with tasks that are physically demanding.
- Let go of perfection: Your home does not need to be spotless or finished in every detail. A loving, functional space is more than enough.
- Trust your own experience: Whether nesting shows up as a burst of activity or not at all, it doesn’t say anything about you as a parent. Pregnancy looks different for everyone.
Listening to your body, respecting your limits, and preparing in ways that feel supportive to you is what truly matters. However the nesting feeling appears for you, it’s okay to meet it with curiosity rather than pressure.
