Your legs, feet and hands may swell more easily during pregnancy due to increased fluid retention in the body. The excess fluid collects in the arms and legs. As your belly grows, it may become more challenging to put on shoes or wear rings on your fingers. Swelling tends to worsen after a long workday or during hot weather. Using support stockings or elevating your legs can help reduce swelling. If you use support stockings, put them on early in the morning before fluid has accumulated in your legs. If you experience rapidly increasing swelling, consult your midwife.Things you can do to relieve leg swelling:
- Move your feet and legs frequently and avoid prolonged periods of sitting.
- Elevate your legs whenever possible, using a footstool during the day and pillows at night.
- Avoid sitting with your legs crossed as it hinders circulation.
- Stay active; take walks or engage in light exercise.
