What is self-compassion?

The term originates from the English "self-compassion" and has its roots in Buddhism. Self-compassion fundamentally involves treating oneself with the same compassion and kindness as one would with a partner, child, or close friend.

Positive effects of self-compassion

Having good self-compassion contributes to reduced stress, anxiety and overall increased well-being. It can also help you achieve your goals, big or small. Being more empathetic and less critical toward yourself makes it easier to make mistakes (to err is human!) and dare to learn from them, take more significant risks, etc.

Signs you may need more self-compassion in your life:

  • You speak negatively about yourself
  • You belittle or ignore your feelings
  • You are critical and unforgiving of yourself when you feel you've done something wrong
  • You compare yourself to others and always feel inferior
  • You live in the past or the future, not in the present
