Pregnancy nausea is very common, with about 8 out of 10 experiencing nausea during pregnancy. Some feel nauseous early in pregnancy, while others experience it throughout. The severity and duration of nausea vary individually and from one pregnancy to another.

There's much you can do to alleviate the discomfort. If none of the tips below help, don't hesitate to contact your midwife for assistance. In extreme cases (0.3-3%), a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum, which requires different treatment, may occur.

  • Eat small, frequent meals
  • Try drinking carbonated water
  • Have a carbohydrate snack for a snack, such as fruit or a sandwich
  • Eat something before getting out of bed after sleeping
  • Consume cooked, non-spicy food
  • Avoid overly fatty food
  • Stay well-hydrated, especially if vomiting frequently
  • Practice yoga
