Journaling can be a meaningful way to reflect on your pregnancy journey and your evolving thoughts about becoming a parent. Writing often helps soothe emotional overwhelm, organize thoughts and feelings, and capture moments along the way, creating something you can look back on and remember long after pregnancy is over.
It doesn’t always come naturally, so we gathered some tips to get this important habit going:
- No perfection needed. You don't need all new stationery or the most beautiful opening line, just start.
- Write a little. Some days your thoughts may flow easily onto the page, other days, they may not. Even a couple of lines are enough, whatever you write is more than okay.
- Make it part of your routine. If you want journaling to become a habit, keep it simple and realistic. Aim for something that feels easy to maintain, rather than another task on your to-do list. Pairing it with an existing routine can help. For example, writing for five minutes after breakfast or dinner, to help it fit naturally into your day.
- Make it your own. If you like collage, add some of it to your journal. If you like drawing, express yourself with it. There’s no right or wrong way to journal during pregnancy.
You can always write down whatever comes to mind, but if you need a little guidance, here are a few ideas:
- Today, I’m feeling…
- Right now, I’m grateful for…
- I feel most like myself when…
- What excites me most about becoming a parent is…
- My favorite pregnancy memory so far is…
- A milestone we’ve just experienced together is…
- A song that’s meaningful to me right now is…
- What’s currently giving me energy or motivation?
- These weeks feel like…
- My relationships with loved ones feel…
- Something I want to say to my baby today is…
