Knowing what your baby shouldn’t wear is just as important as knowing how to dress your baby. Your baby needs to be comfortable and safe, and the clothes should be chosen accordingly. Some of the things to keep in mind are:

  • Your baby should not wear mittens. Your baby’s hands will get cold and their fingernails quite sharp. However, mittens are not the solution. First of all, keep in mind that your baby’s real temperature can be felt on their neck, not on their hands. Also, for the fingernails, they should be cut periodically, carefully and with appropriate tools. Mittens are not only unnecessary, but they can also be harmful for your baby’s health and development. Your baby needs to have access to their hands, so they can explore and get to know the world around them, show that they are hungry and sooth themselves.
  • Their clothes should not be unsuitable for sleepwear or in a material that is not recommended near heat sources.
  • Avoid synthetic fabric. They are not breathable, which can both cause skin irritation and result in your baby getting too warm.
  • Hats are also not recommended during sleep. Just like synthetic fabrics, they bring the risk of overheating.
  • Even though the general recommendation is to dress your baby with natural fabric as much as possible, be careful with wool. You should not exclude it from your child’s wardrobe, since it is such a good layer, but keep in mind that its texture is irritating; therefore, it can be a rash trigger. Nevertheless, there is no need to worry, as long as the fabric is not in direct contact with your baby’s skin, it is very appropriate and safe for them to wear. Also, keep in mind that there are different types of wool, merino wool is more gentle on the baby’s skin as it has a much softer texture. So this is a perfect option when you’re looking for wool garments for your baby.
